Laser Decompression Therapy

A digital image of a man with a glowing spine.Bulging or herniated discs may cause a variety of painful symptoms such as pain radiating down one or both legs, sciatica or severe low back pain. At our Alexander Chiropractic and Wellness Pleasanton location, we offer laser decompression therapy, which offers new hope for our patients with disc issues.

How Does Decompression Work?

Think of squishing a jelly donut between your hands. That pressure causes the jelly to ooze out of the donut, and it’s like what happens when a disc is injured. Now, think of pulling the donut back in the opposite direction—that action creates a vacuum, which pulls the jelly back into the donut.
NEW PATIENTS

Non-surgical spinal decompression works in the same way! It gently stretches your spine, allowing the fluid that has been “bulging” out of the disc to be pulled back where it belongs. This reduces pressure on the nerve roots that have been causing your pain.

We have a special table that performs axial decompression, stretching from head to toe. It’s a gentle traction that relieves pressure on the discs and nerves.

How Laser Therapy Works

Tissues require a lot of energy to heal, and that’s where the cold laser comes in. This modality has been shown to stimulate the mitochondria within the cells. The mitochondria are like batteries, producing the energy the cell needs to heal and function. The specific wavelengths of light used in laser therapy interact with the mitochondria, producing a reaction that speeds up the healing process. This therapy is safe and painless, as it produces no heat.

Our Comprehensive Approach

In laser decompression therapy, we are combining these two effective modalities. You’ll lie face-down on our automatic flexion distraction table, and while we do the axial decompression, you’ll also have the cold laser directed at your injured discs.

A session typically lasts about 10-15 minutes, and may be followed up with a chiropractic adjustment.

Healing discs takes time, and most patients see relief within about three months.
